A New Dawn for De La Soul: 'Cabin in the Sky' is on the Horizon!
Get ready, hip-hop heads! De La Soul is back with a brand new album, Cabin in the Sky, set to drop on November 21st, courtesy of Mass Appeal. This marks a significant moment, especially considering the challenges they've faced.
To give us a taste of what's to come, they've unveiled their first single, "The Package." You can stream it now. This release is part of Mass Appeal's "Legend Has It…" series, which features seven new albums from iconic New York hip-hop artists.
Cabin in the Sky is more than just an album; it's a milestone. It's De La Soul's first full-length project since their Grammy-nominated 2016 album, and the Anonymous Nobody. This project also arrives after the heartbreaking loss of co-founder Trugoy the Dove in 2023. However, his spirit lives on, as he contributes multiple verses to "The Package."
But here's where it gets exciting: the album boasts an impressive lineup of guest artists, including Killer Mike, Nas, Black Thought, Common, and Yukimi of Little Dragon. The production is handled by a dream team: DJ Premier, Super Dave, and Pete Rock, with the latter producing "The Package."
Posdnuos shared a powerful message about the album, saying, "Cabin in the Sky lives in that space between loss and light. It’s about the pain we carry and the joy that somehow still finds us. This album is therapy and celebration at the same time." He continued, "There’s a vulnerability in these songs, because everything we’ve been through has brought us to this moment, to this album, honoring what we’ve lost and lifting up what still remains. That duality. That’s life, and that’s De La."
DJ Maseo added his perspective: "The music on this record is not old, just seasoned. It’s what we call adult hip-hop: something rooted in the culture but speaking to where we are now. The beauty is that it still connects with the younger heads, too. They can feel the honesty, the craft, and that De La Soul DNA running through it. We’re bridging generations with this one."
"The Package" itself is a testament to their evolution. The first verse, delivered by Pos, showcases a forward-thinking approach, urging listeners to embrace the present. Trugoy's verse adds a layer of depth, reflecting on life's journey.
Earlier this year, De La Soul celebrated the 20th anniversary of their seventh studio album, The Grind Date, with a special reissue. They also released a new animated video for their 2004 collaboration with MF DOOM, "Rock Co. Kane Flow."
