The demolition of a historic bridge marks the end of an era, but it also signals the dawn of a new chapter for infrastructure in Weston-super-Mare. This 85-year-old structure, known as Winterstoke Road Bridge, played a significant role during World War II and has now been taken down to make way for a modern replacement.
Due to concerns over its deteriorating state, the bridge was closed to traffic in November and officially demolished over the Christmas holiday. According to North Somerset Council, the majority of the demolition work was carried out on Christmas Day when trains were not in operation, allowing for the safe removal of the bridge that spanned a vital railway line connecting Bristol and Taunton. The council emphasized that this demolition is a necessary step towards building a "stronger and more reliable bridge," which will serve the community for the next 120 years.
Plans are already in motion for an impressive £11 million replacement bridge set to open in the spring of 2027. Originally constructed in 1941, the Winterstoke Road Bridge provided essential access to the RAF’s airplane production facility in Oldmixon. At the time of its closure, it accommodated around 20,000 vehicles daily, illustrating its importance to local transport.
The demolition process involved not just taking down the bridge itself, but also leveling its supports and adjoining roads. All debris was carefully removed from the rail tracks to ensure that train services could resume safely after Boxing Day.
In the upcoming weeks, contractors from Octavius Infrastructure will commence extensive piling and foundation work for the new bridge, laying the groundwork for this major infrastructure upgrade.
Mike Bell, the leader of North Somerset Council, expressed gratitude to local residents for their understanding throughout the demolition process. He stated, "By replacing Winterstoke Road Bridge, we are making a crucial long-term investment in our local infrastructure. This investment aims to maintain and enhance current road capacity while also ensuring that we are prepared for future growth with the resilience and reliability our community needs."
During the construction of the new bridge, a temporary footbridge will remain in place over the railway, allowing pedestrian access throughout the project.
