Manchester United vs Paris St-Germain: Mary Earps' Emotional Return to Old Trafford
The Women's Champions League match between Manchester United and Paris St-Germain on November 12th promises to be an emotional affair, with goalkeeper Mary Earps returning to her former club. After 501 days away, Earps will be on the opposing side when PSG visit Old Trafford, a place she once called home.
"It felt like it was written in the stars," Earps told BBC Sport, reflecting on her return. "Sometimes you just know, and maybe I manifested it."
Earps, who played 125 games for United over five years, exchanged messages with her former teammate Ella Toone after the draw was made. She expressed her excitement, "Going back to Old Trafford, a special place with so many memories, I'm looking forward to the game."
The spotlight will be on Earps, who has been in the news recently for her autobiography, where she made controversial comments about former England teammates and manager. United manager Marc Skinner acknowledged her leadership and voice, saying, "Mary was always a leader. She always had a voice and her own opinion, which I welcomed."
Despite her departure, Earps' time at United was successful, including a Women's FA Cup win in 2024. However, she rejected a new contract, citing a period of transition at the club that didn't align with her career goals. Fara Williams, a former England midfielder, believes Earps will be well-received, "I think she will get a good reception. Her time at Manchester United was very good."
Earps, however, anticipates some booing from fans, understanding the loyalty of United supporters. United manager Skinner hopes her book won't change perceptions, "Deep down I know Mary is a good person."
Earps' move to PSG has been a positive experience, allowing her to escape the pressure of international football. She seamlessly integrated into the team, becoming their number one choice, starting 22 of 24 league matches last season. However, PSG had a disappointing campaign, finishing behind Lyon and losing in the play-off final.
This season, PSG are second in the league, three points behind Lyon, and seeking their first Champions League win after losses to Wolfsburg and Real Madrid. Earps has been a consistent performer, starting every game and conceding 15 goals in nine matches.
PSG coach Paulo Cesar has full confidence in Earps, "She is completely ready for the game. I can't see any impact on her as a person."
Defender Olga Carmona shares the team's trust in Earps, "It's a pleasure to play with Mary. I'm very lucky to be in the same team as her."
As Earps prepares for her emotional reunion with Old Trafford, the stage is set for a captivating match, blending personal journeys with professional rivalry.
