Player safety is taking center stage in the world of rugby! Big changes are coming to the Under-20 World Championship in Georgia next summer, as tackles above the sternum will be strictly prohibited. This move signals a significant step towards potentially lowering the maximum tackle height across the sport at all levels.
Over the last two seasons, the community game in 11 countries has already seen the tackle height limit drop from the shoulder to the sternum. The results? Analysis of nearly 150,000 tackles since the change has shown varied reductions in concussion rates, and interestingly, tacklers are adapting by lowering their body position.
"Player welfare is paramount to World Rugby," stated Chairman Brett Robinson. He emphasized their commitment to making the game as safe as possible while also preserving the essence of rugby. The upcoming trial at the Under-20 Championship will be closely monitored to ensure the game remains exciting for both players and fans.
It's important to note that the new lower tackle height won't apply in certain situations, such as when an attacking player is "picking and going" near a breakdown or the base of a scrum, or when they're in the act of scoring. Additionally, ball carriers will face penalties if they lead with their head, making legal tackles challenging. If a tackle lands above the sternum but below the head, play will continue with an advantage given to the attacking team.
This change will also be implemented in community rugby worldwide on July 1st.
While some positive feedback has emerged from England and France regarding how the law change has opened up the game, World Rugby's overall analysis across the 11 unions showed only slight changes in offloads, kicks, and the overall game flow.
But here's where it gets controversial... Jonathan Webb, World Rugby's vice-chair and former England full-back, suggests that a full rollout, rather than another limited trial, might be the next step if the laws prove successful at the Under-20 World Championship. He acknowledges that this would be a major decision, especially considering the faster pace and intense scrutiny of the elite game.
And this is the part most people miss... Webb believes that if the change is implemented in the elite game, it would likely need to be an all-or-nothing approach. This presents a complex challenge due to the increased speed, scrutiny, and pressure on players and referees.
