SIUE Men's Basketball: A Season of Anticipation and Recognition
The SIUE Cougars men's basketball team is gearing up for an exciting 2025-26 season, following their remarkable achievements in the previous year. After securing their first-ever Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Championship and making their March Madness debut, the team has been ranked third in the OVC Preseason Poll, earning a first-place vote and 163 points.
The Cougars' success is a testament to their consistent performance and ability to compete at the top of the league. SIUE Head Coach Brian Barone expressed his pride in the team's recognition, stating, 'What it speaks to is our program being considered consistently. We are recognized as a team that can compete towards the top of the league.'
The Preseason Poll reveals an intriguing landscape. Little Rock emerged as the favorite, securing 12 first-place votes and 188 points. Southeast Missouri followed closely behind, chosen second with 177 points and six first-place votes. Tennessee State, Lindenwood, and Morehead State rounded out the top five with 135, 100, and 100 points, respectively.
Two standout players, seniors Ring Malith and Arnas Sakenis, were named SIUE's Players to Watch. Malith, a versatile forward, averaged 11.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, leading the team in rebounding and earning All-Tournament recognition. Sakenis, a towering center, dominated with 48 total blocks and 1.85 blocks per game, the most in the league.
Barone praised Malith's multifaceted skills, noting his impact on both ends of the court. He highlighted Sakenis' defensive prowess, emphasizing his consistent effort and size advantage. These players' contributions are expected to be pivotal in the team's upcoming season.
