When James Graham's "Punch" hit the West End, it left a lasting impression on everyone involved. Despite concerns about the impact of social media on attention spans, the schoolchildren in the audience were completely engrossed, staying for Q&A sessions and creating an atmosphere that the playwright described as remarkable.
"Punch" tells the true story of Jacob Dunne, a Nottingham teenager whose life took a tragic turn when a single punch on a night out led to the death of a stranger. Adapted from Dunne's memoir, "Right From Wrong," the play explores the aftermath of this incident, including Dunne's time in prison and the remarkable journey of restorative justice with the victim's parents.
The play's journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. It opened in Nottingham Playhouse in May 2024, then moved to the Young Vic, and simultaneously opened on Broadway and in the West End. Its 10-week run in London's Apollo Theatre attracted a massive audience, with over 10% of attendees being school groups.
Graham believes that the play's success lies in its ability to connect with younger audiences. "Seeing a young man overcome difficult circumstances and unhealthy influences, be it gangs or social media, is incredibly inspiring. Jacob's story offers a glimmer of hope in a world where young men face unique challenges in the 21st century."
What's most striking about the story, according to Graham, is its hopeful trajectory. "Jacob's life took a turn for the better. He educated himself, earned a PhD, and became a father. It was the incredible act of forgiveness from the parents of the man he killed that saved his life. By responding to them, Jacob helped them find solace in their grief. It's a moving story that deserves to be told."
Graham is now working on an adapted version of "Punch" specifically for younger audiences, which will be taken into schools. He aims to bring the play to schools with less access to the arts, believing that drama fosters empathy, which is especially important in today's cultural climate.
The producer, Kate Pakenham, explained that profits from the West End run have been used to fund the schools version, and they're seeking additional partnership funding. "Teachers see the value of "Punch" across various subjects, and given the practical and financial challenges schools face, we want to bring the play to them."
The play's success comes at a time when there are warnings of a sharp decline in new productions since the pandemic. Despite this, demand for new work has risen, with 41.9% of theater attendances in 2023 being for new plays, up from 29.9% in 2019.
"There's a hunger for new stories, but it's not an easy task. We're facing a storytelling crisis in our nation. We need to imagine the next chapter of our national life, and theater, like "Punch," can play a vital role in that."
